Latest iPhone 12 news: an in depth release date leak suggests that the iPhone 12 range won't be announced until October, which the professional models won't ship until November.

iPhone 12 key facts

  1. What is it? The new iPhone family from Apple
  2. When is it out? Probably October - but could be announced in September
  3. What will it cost? Expect $649 / £700 / AU$1,200 and up

When will the iPhone 12 come out?

The exact iPhone 12 announcement date may be a confusing topic, and Apple itself has now said the iPhone 12 range won't continue sale until a couple of weeks later than usual, which likely means sometime in October.

Indeed, the newest leaked release date lines up thereupon , as Jon Prosser (a leaker with a mixed track record) has said that the iPhone 12 range are going to be announced on the week commencing Columbus Day (which might mean an announcement on Tuesday, October 13, since Apple often unveils things on a Tuesday.)

Pre-orders for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max would apparently then open on an equivalent week - probably Friday, October 16 supported Apple's past form. then , the phones would apparently ship on the week commencing October 19 (likely meaning Friday, October 23).

However, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max apparently won't be up for pre-order or ship until sometime in November. we might however take these claims with a pinch of salt, especially as Mark Gurman (an Apple leaker with an honest track record) replied with a thumbs down emoji, suggesting they think Prosser is wrong.

Plus, a minimum of one tipster has said the announcement day are going to be September 8, during which case it's going to just be the particular date you'll buy the phones which will be pushed back.

Usually, we'd have said September is nearly certainly when we'd see the phones, and in past years it's often been the second week of the month. New iPhones are nearly always unveiled on a Tuesday, and thereupon in mind September 8 is sensible .

But as noted Apple itself has said there is a delay in when the phones will continue sale, so there can also be a delay within the announcement, as Prosser suggests.

Indeed, one among the newest reports on the matter, which comes from “multiple suppliers in China”, suggests that the iPhone 12 range won't be announced until late October, with the 4G models hitting stores shortly after, while the 5G iPhone 12 models won't continue sale until November.

On the opposite hand, a source has now suggested that it's actually the 5G models which will land first, with the 4G ones potentially not arriving until early 2021, so we're unsure what's accurate there.

Staggering the discharge date of models are some things that's also been suggested by respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who says it might likely be the larger models of the phone that might come later than September. Kuo has said that multiple times, whilst recently because the start of August.

An executive at Broadcom - a manufacturer expected to provide components for the new iPhone - has also suggested a delay is probably going , while one report within the Wall Street Journal also suggested production of the iPhone 12 has been delayed by around a month.

Some sources even say it could slip into 2021 with Reuters also claiming a delay might be likely.

Another rumor states that production of the iPhone 12 range was between four weeks and two months not on time , which could mean an enormous delay, though Apple is seemingly doing everything it can to attenuate the delay.

Meanwhile, other rumors suggest Apple finished its final testing by the top of June, and entered production in July, which sounds brighter .

So, when will you get your iPhone 12? we will not say surely . Apple's comment isn't particularly specific, which may be pertaining to when the phones continue sale. the majority of the rumors seem to point to a delay of between one and two months, so October or November is looking likely - though the phones could be announced before then.

How much will the iPhone 12 cost?

The iPhone 12 price are some things that leaks have made a touch clearer than the discharge date, and from what we're hearing it's likely to remain broadly in line with 2019's iPhone range.

For reference, the iPhone 11 started at $699 / £729 / AU$1,199, the iPhone 11 Pro starts at $999 / £1,049 / AU$1,749, and therefore the iPhone 11 Pro Max starts at $1,099 / £1,149 / AU$1,899.

Prices for subsequent iPhone range probably won't be precisely the same though, as you'll see within the chart below, which contains information taken from one big leak from YouTuber Jon Prosser. We've also included information from another leak, which suggests there'll be 4G variants of two of the models.

Leaked prices

Model 128GB 256GB 512GB
iPhone 12 4G $549 No leaked information No leaked information
iPhone 12 5G $649 $749 Not an option
iPhone 12 Max 4G $649 No leaked information No leaked information
iPhone 12 Max $749 $849 Not an option
iPhone 12 Pro $999 $1,099 $1,299
iPhone 12 Pro Max $1,099 $1,199 $1,399
There's no clear information about prices for the united kingdom or Australia, but we'd expect those to broadly fall in line with last year's models if the knowledge above is accurate.

That said, some sources have claimed the worth could also be set to extend over last year's iPhones. for instance , analyst Jeff Pu has claimed the essential model of the phone may start at $749.

Indeed, an in depth price leak from @komiya_kj also suggests higher prices than the chart above, with the 5G iPhone 12 apparently starting at $699 (roughly £540 / AU$975) for 64GB of storage, and rising to $749 for 128GB (which is that the amount mentioned within the chart).

So that would make it $100 quite that earlier leak suggested for an equivalent amount of storage, and other leaked prices from this source are similarly increased. However, the source doesn't have much of a diary , so we'd take this with a pinch of salt.

But this theory does line up with a previous report that suggested that the value of materials for the iPhone 12 range might go up, which could mean higher prices at retail. Still, for now we'd say prices in line with those within the chart above are the foremost likely, given how reputable the most source is.

What will the iPhone 12 look like?

The iPhone 12 design looks set to be an enormous change from the newest few generations of Apple’s handset. Remember the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5? Reports suggest that the iPhone 12 range are going to be partially inspired by those phones, and there is supposedly even some elements of the iPad Pro 2020 mixed in.

Specifically, consistent leaks have suggested that the iPhone 12 will have a flatter metal frame than the iPhone 11 range, with Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who's a really trusted source, being among those to mention this.

The rear of all four phones remains expected to be made from glass, but the sides are expected to be more squared than the rounded ones on current models.

Some sources chatting with Bloomberg claim similar, and that they make comparisons to the planning of the iPad Pro, saying that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will have flat chrome steel edges, more sharply rounded corners, and flat screens.

For a thought of how which may look in practice, inspect the CAD renders below, made by EverythingApplePro and Max Weinbach.

The tweet below also shows off what the planning may appear as if . The source claims these are official molds which will be utilized in the assembly of subsequent iPhone.

Elsewhere, we've heard that the whole new iPhone range might be thinner than the iPhone 11 range. a selected thickness is merely given for the iPhone 12 Pro Max though, which is seemingly 7.4mm (down from 8.1mm on the iPhone 11 Pro Max).

And the phones won't just be slim - a separate leak has suggested the quality (supposedly 5.4-inch) iPhone 12 looks smaller than the iPhone 7, but isn't as small because the original iPhone SE. you'll see a video comparing those three phones here, while the tweet below provides another check out the possible 5.4-inch iPhone 12.

We've also heard from Jon Prosser - a leaker with an honest diary - that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will have aluminum frames, which the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will have chrome steel ones, which all four phones will have smaller notches than the iPhone 11 range.

All that said, leaked renders that are newer than most of these above show some significant design differences to earlier leaks, as you'll see below.

Based on these - shared by EverythingApplePro - the iPhone 12 Pro a minimum of could have the old notch design (rather than a smaller notch), an outsized mmWave antenna cut-out, and a special camera arrangement to what we have seen in other leaks.

Sonny Dickson (a leaker with an honest track record) has also now shared iPhone 12 range dummy units that appear to be in line with this - also as having flat edges, as rumored above. you'll see these here.

That said, other reputable sources seem skeptical of those leaks, particularly when it involves the camera, so we'd take them with a pinch of salt. For now, we'd say the leaks and details towards the highest of this section are more likely to be right.

What colors will the iPhone 12 come in?

As for the iPhone 12 colors, we've heard a rumor that Apple are going to be debuting a navy blue on its top-end models. Reports say the Midnight Green color that debuted on the iPhone 11 Pro sold beyond Apple's expectations, so the company can also plan to keep that or it may be replaced in the lineup by this navy shade.

The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max were available in Space Gray, Silver and Gold alongside Midnight Green. Those shades may remain for the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, but we've yet to listen to any firm evidence that those colors will return.

As for the standard phone, we're expecting a similar pastel range to the iPhone 11. That phone is available in Black, Green, Yellow, Purple, Red and White, so you ought to probably expect some of those colors to return for 2020's device.

What screen will the iPhone 12 have?

The biggest change to the screen might be the sizes it's available in, as consistent with most information, the phones below are going to be included:

  1. iPhone 12 with a 5.4-inch display
  2. iPhone 12 Max with a 6.1-inch display
  3. iPhone 12 Pro with a 6.1-inch display
  4. iPhone 12 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch display
If this is often accurate then we'd be seeing a non-pro 'Max' model for the primary time within the sort of the iPhone 12 Max. it's set to possess a bigger screen size than the quality iPhone 12, designed for those that don't need to spend lots on an iPhone 12 Pro Max model but need a larger phone.

That said, the dimensions is really in line with the iPhone 11, so instead of making a much bigger basic iPhone, Apple has seemingly shrunk the quality model, and if this information is true then you continue to only have three sizes to settle on from, with the iPhone 12 Max supposedly being an equivalent size because the iPhone 11.

There's also strong evidence of the 5.4-inch model, as 9to5Mac has found an update to the Display Zoom feature in an iOS 14 beta, which adds support for a smaller screen size.

Display Zoom allows you to vary the dimensions of the interface on an iPhone to match that of a smaller screen iPhone. So for instance the 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max can switch to a 5.8-inch display view, which makes all the icons bigger and more zoomed in. However, now there's an option for a 960 x 2079 display, which does not match any current iPhone but would add up for a 5.4-inch model.

We've also seen what appears to be the screen for the 5.4-inch model on a assembly line , showing just how small it'd be.

Beyond the dimensions , Ming-Chi Kuo has said that each one the iPhone 12 models may accompany OLED screen tech for the primary time. That’s a claim we’ve heard quite once.

The iPhone 11 features an LCD display, while the iPhone 11 Pro features OLED technology. So a move to OLED on all of them may leave a far stronger screen on the quality iPhone 12 models, although we do not yet have any clear details on the resolution you'll expect from any of the four phones' displays.

The other big rumored change for the 2020 iPhone display is that the move to a 120Hz refresh rate. the present iPhones - and tons of other smartphones - sport a refresh rate of 60Hz, so upping that to 120Hz makes the screen reload quicker and provides you a smoother experience when scrolling through social media feeds or gaming.

Max Weinbach shared some leaked information on the iPhone 12 Pro that suggested this was the model that might get the improved screen tech. Prosser since suggests that tech would also come to the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

This is a claim we've now heard quite once, with an inventory of 2020's current and upcoming 120Hz phones also including the 2 iPhone 12 Pro models. Indeed, some phones have already got higher refresh rates than 60Hz, as do some iPads, so this move isn’t unbelievable. That's very true as top-end phones just like the Samsung Galaxy S20 and OnePlus 8 Pro now feature the tech too.

All of this said, the source that gives information to Prosser has said that Apple may "nerf" the technology. which will mean there are limitations to when the 120Hz refresh rate works, which may come right down to the battery lifetime of the handsets.

We've also now heard, via YouTuber EverythingApplePro, that Apple is seemingly battling the 120Hz tech within the Pro model. And one analyst has said they've heard from sources that Apple won't be including the required component tech to form it a reality.

Most recently of all we've heard from a display supply chain expert that none of their contacts could corroborate reports of a 120Hz display, in order that they don't think any iPhone will get one until 2021.

So it's unclear immediately whether or not we'll see a 120Hz iPhone 12 screen, though the foremost recent reports suggest that we probably won't.

Finally, we've also heard from another source that the 2 Pro models will use a sort of OLED that's both thinner and cheaper to supply than the screens utilized in the iPhone 11 Pro range. that would mean lower prices and thinner devices, also as potentially better battery life, and it is a claim we've heard quite once.

Will the iPhone 12 camera be any better?

A lot of the new iPhone leaks suggest that we're getting to see some big changes to the camera on each device.

The main change is probably going to be the addition of a LiDAR scanner, a bit like we have seen on the iPad Pro 2020. this will accurately judge distances and thus depth, and would leave improved augmented reality and Portrait mode.

We've heard specific mentions of a LiDAR scanner being included on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max (alongside three lenses), while the essential iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max are said to possess two camera lenses and no LiDAR scanner. These claims are made by multiple sources, and therefore the below image (made by Phone Arena) shows how the camera could look on the professional model.

An example of what the iPhone 12 Pro camera could appear as if An example of what the iPhone 12 Pro camera could look like (Image credit: Phone Arena)
We've also seen a leaked sketch (below) seemingly showing four rear lenses on the iPhone 12 Pro. This sketch supposedly came from a build of iOS 14, and is protected by many other sources.

Three of the lenses appear as if those on the iPhone 11 Pro, if perhaps slightly bigger, but the new fourth lens seems like the LiDAR scanner found on the iPad Pro 2020, a bit like within the render above.

A LiDAR scanner then is looking very likely, a minimum of on the professional models, and we're also quite confident of the lens numbers, given the massive amount of leaks.

The table below lays these details out clearly. Note that the LiDAR scanner is additionally to the amount of cameras listed below.

iPhone 12 camera spec rumors
iPhone 12 iPhone 12 Max iPhone 12 Pro iPhone 12 Pro Max
How many cameras? Two Two Three Three
LiDAR scanner? No No Yes Yes
As for the specs of the camera, that's something we're less clear on thus far , but one source says the iPhone 12 may need a 64MP main camera, over the 12MP snapper on the last few versions, which might be an enormous upgrade. This leak also suggests that the phone will have multiple lenses that support night mode shooting, which the ultra-wide snapper could have a fanatical macro mode.

Plus, reputable leaker Max Weinbach says he has heard that the iPhone 12 Pro will feature Smart HDR functionality for improved low-light performance. That's alongside a 3x optical zoom, which is a rise from the 2x zoom capability featured within the iPhone 11 range.

Ming-Chi Kuo, a respected tech analyst, meanwhile has said he believes Apple are going to be making big improvements to autofocus on the iPhone 12 by using new parts from a special supplier.

We've also heard that the top-end new iPhone (likely the iPhone 12 Pro Max) will get a replacement image stabilization tech called 'sensor-shift', which might allow the sensor to maneuver so as to counteract camera shake.

And we've also heard that each one four new iPhone models might get a camera improvement within the sort of a 7-element fisheye lens . That's another element than current models, which could lead on to fewer aberrations and fewer distortion.

7 new features we would like to ascertain within the iPhone 12 camera

What can we want to ascertain the iPhone 12 camera do? Mark Wilson, Cameras Editor at TechRadar says...

"The iPhone 11 and 11 Pro’s cameras gave us great new shooting options, but what I’d adore to ascertain on the iPhone 12 is Apple ramping up the standard on those ultra-wide and telephoto lenses.

"Both of these have smaller sensors and slower apertures than the most camera, and may struggle in lower light. It’d be great to ascertain Night Mode available altogether shooting situations and also a brighter lens on the ultra-wide with optical image stabilization.

"I’d also like to see Apple’s combat the periscope lens design we’ve seen from Samsung, Huawei and Oppo for a lift in optical zoom, though we may need to wait a touch longer for that.

“Away from pure photography, one other thing I’m keen to ascertain on the iPhone 12 may be a LiDAR scanner, just like the one on the iPad Pro 2020. albeit the Apple Glasses don’t arrive for a short time yet, this might give us a ringside to some next-gen AR experiences, which were hinted at during WWDC 2020.

"In particular, the new ‘location anchors’ in ARKit 4 show that Apple’s AR tech is close to step outside, which could open up some fun gaming possibilities. A Lidar scanner could also see photography evolve in new directions, as Halide’s proof-of-concept Esper app shows”.

What is a LiDAR scanner, anyway?

What other iPhone 12 specs do you have to expect?

We're expecting the iPhone 12 range to use a 5nm A14 Bionic chipset. This chipset has been mentioned more than once. What that means for the average consumer is an iPhone with more power than ever.

The RAM could also get a boost, with analysts claiming that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will have 6GB of the stuff, up from 4GB on their predecessors - though the quality phone will apparently stick with 4GB. this is often something we've now heard again, again and again, so it may rather be true.

The chipset seems ready to wow too, as an A14 Bionic leaked benchmark showed it had a single-core and multi-score score that was before the Snapdragon 865, the processor we've seen in most Android flagships in 2020.

And the iPhone 12 might also support the new 802.11ay specification, which could allow it to share content at speeds of at least 20-30Gbps.

New iPhone 12The iPhone 11 from 2019 (Image credit: TechRadar)
How much storage will you have? A pricing leak from Prosser showed us the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will apparently come in 128GB and 256GB models while the pro and Pro Max will supposedly come in both of those and 512GB.

One leak can also have given us a clear picture of batteries you'll expect in each of the iPhone 12 models:

iPhone 12 may have a 2,227mAh battery
iPhone 12 Max and iPhone 12 Pro may have a 2,775mAh battery
iPhone 12 Pro Max may have a 3,687mAh battery
If this leak is true, it's going to not be positive news for the iPhone 12's battery life.

The iPhone 11 features a 3,110mAh battery, the iPhone 11 Pro features a 3,046mAh one, and therefore the iPhone 11 Pro Max features a 3,969mAh one – and that’s despite the iPhone 11 Pro Max having a smaller screen than the iPhone 12 Pro Max is rumored to possess .

It's not certain these are going to be the batteries we'll see within the upcoming phones, but it's our greatest look yet at the cells you'll expect within the new phones.

Having said that, one other rumor states that the batteries within the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max won't exceed 4,400mAh - a figure which in both cases would be an improvement on the battery sizes in their predecessors.

Wireless charging is predicted to be included within the iPhone 12 - which isn't an enormous surprise - and one leak suggests the phone will accompany magnets that allow it to more easily line up with wireless chargers.

Will the iPhone 12 use USB-C? The rumors currently suggest it'll be sticking with a Lightning cable. Multiple sources have said USB-C won't happen, with the iPhone 12 likely sticking with Lightning, and therefore the iPhone 13 potentially switching to a portless design.

That said, a recent EU ruling can also mean future iPhones won't be ready to use Lightning cables in Europe. which will force Apple to modify the connector on future phones to USB-C, and while it isn't clear yet whether this may be the case for the iPhone 12 it's going to be something to think about .

Another report from Chinese publication Caifa news also suggests Apple and other manufacturers may soon use GaN power adapters. These are currently employed by Xiaomi, and permit for fast-charging accelerates to 65 watts.

There's no guarantee this may debut on the iPhone 12 - or any future iPhone for that matter - but it's going to mean we see an improved fast-charging experience along the road .

So, what is the takeaway on the new iPhone specs? inspect the chart below for a distilled check out what we're expecting. Note that it includes 5G information, more details of which may be found within the next section.

Will the iPhone 12 be 5G-ready?

5G is predicted to form its debut on an Apple phone with the iPhone 12. In fact, rumors suggest we'll see all the models feature some sort of 5G connectivity, powered by a custom-made 5G antenna. Prosser has suggested the maximum amount in information that he apparently learned from a source at Apple.

The big caveat here is that the bottom iPhone 12 models might not support mmWave 5G technology. It's expected this may be a feature reserved for the 2 top-end models, as shown within the chart above.

Those models are thought to support both mmWave and slower Sub-6 5G, while the cheaper two models might just support Sub-6. Not only is that slower, but some carriers like Verizon within the US only offer mmWave, so customers of that network may need to choose a pricier model.

Further evidence that each iPhone 12 model will get 5G of some sort though may be a leak revealing 3D-printed models of all four iPhones, which suggests that each one four have had their SIM slot relocated from the proper side to the left, with a source stating they were moved to form room for 5G antennas.

A final leak on the subject of 5G is that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max may both accompany 4G options. That's from an unverified source, but it's going to allow you to urge a less expensive device than the top-end 5G options.

Having said that, with 5G being much more future-proofed, you would possibly want to think hard before buying a 4G iPhone 12, especially if the prices aren't much lower.

Will the iPhone 12 accompany AirPods?

The short answer to the above question is not any . it's extremely unlikely Apple will put a pair of AirPods within the box with a replacement iPhone as they have been a serious money maker for the corporate when sold separately.

Apple may prefer to unveil the rumored AirPods 3 alongside the new handset at its event, but it's heavily rumored that the corporate won't be including a pair of earbuds of any kind within the iPhone 12 box - not even cheap ones.

AirPods ProApple's AirPods Pro (Image credit: Future)
Similarly, we've now heard that Apple won't include an influence adapter either (though you'll still get a charging cable). this might however mean costs are going to be reduced. It could also leave smaller packaging and make it lighter and thus cheaper to ship, though what proportion of this saving are going to be passed on to consumers is unknown.

It seems Apple has already surveyed customers about this potential change.

Another report has also suggested that Apple is functioning on a 20W charger, which could also be included within the box alongside the new phone. The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max both featured an 18W charger, while the iPhone 11 had a 5W option.

Leaked images have shown the 20W charger, but it's unclear if it's made to be included with the top-end devices or the entire range. If it's only for the top-end devices, we're hoping Apple increases the wattage for the quality models over 5W.

It may be that these chargers are sold separately within the end; we likely won't know anything surely until Apple mentions it on stage at the launch event.

Opinion: you do not need a charger together with your iPhone 12

What will iOS 14 bring back the iPhone 12?
Apple's WWDC 2020 replacement event saw the corporate unveil its new iOS 14 software, and this is often the software we expect to ascertain the corporate debut on the iPhone 12 later this year.

It'll also likely be coming to your current iPhone though, as many older models are going to be updated.

What new features do you have to expect? Improved home screen widgets so you'll better personalize your phone's main page for one, plus there's also a replacement way of filing your apps away called the App Library. This sits at the top of your home screens.

iOS 14 also will debut "light and fast" versions of certain apps that allow you to use some features without downloading the complete app. These are called App Clips, and Apple believes they'll be useful in scenarios like hiring electric scooters or paying for parking.

Other minor improvements are coming to the Messages app, Apple Maps, Siri, and a spread of other first-party applications. there is a lot that's being tweaked, and while iOS 14 might not bring any hugely game-changing features to the iPhone 12 it's bound to be a number of the simplest software from the corporate thus far .
